Supposed to be lazy I think. Xx.

Laziness would not seem to be the issue, rather more that the poor bloke has been very unlucky with injuries, there’s probably not many clubs willing to take a punt on a player who’s missed 214 games through injury.

Won’t detail the ankle, knee and hairline injuries etc he suffered whilst at Arsenal, as it would take too long, but his more recent problems at West Ham will have heightened the concerns of any prospective club.

Having joined the Hammers in July 2018, he picked up an ankle injury an hour into the fourth game, which kept him out for 9 games. He managed 5 minutes in the following game but then required ankle surgery, sidelining him until the third week in April. Two games into the following season, he picked up a groin injury and missed the next two games. After warming the bench for the following game, he then managed 4 sub appearances before a significantly worse groin injury, which kept him out until the c. v. season break. He was on the subs bench after the season resumed, coming on three times, for a total of 50 minutes. He missed the first two games of the next season with a calf injury then wasn’t selected for the next two, before coming to an agreement with the Club to be released from his contract.

Bournemouth took a chance on him that January, presumably hoping he’d be able to help them push for promotion. He managed to stay injury free to the end of the season, but was unable to inspire promotion, having been given 9 starts and 5 sub appearances in the regular season and contributed 1 goal and 1 assist in the same match against Birmingham, and been given a 9 minute cameo in the first leg of the play-off semifinal. I guess that having not had a significant impact in the ha. f a season in the Championship may also not help his cause, and it’s possible that he may have had some interest from clubs who have not met his playing and / or wage aspirations.

{Ed001's Note - it is his lifestyle that is the issue.}

Ed - maybe that also, but the injury history ain’t going to help. West Ham reportedly had him on £100,000 a week for which he played 814 minutes over to seasons.

{Ed001's Note - no I mean that is also the cause of the injuries. And not every injury was truly an injury as sometimes a long term injury can actually be a suspension which the FA allow to be publicly posted as an injury.}

Do they Ed?
Or am I being naive?

{Ed001's Note - yes Aus, there are always a number of players out throughout the league with falsified injuries. }

I believe one of the reasons this can happen if the player is abusing drugs and is caught or has an ongoing problem. Woodgate was rumoured to have a cocaine abuse problem hence his extended periods on the sidelines.

Ah, OK Ed. Now, THAT would be interesting topic for one of your in-depth articles (in a wider sense rather than Wilshere specific) , though I guess unfortunately it’d be one perhaps best avoided, for possible legal reasons.

Anyway, between us hopefully we’ve managed to come up with an answer to Leo’s question.

{Ed001's Note - it would be a very difficult one to write about but the basic is that anyone who tests positive for any kind of drug, whether PED or recreational, can choose rehab and privacy. The FA covers it up because they do not want to reveal these things, it is bad for the game's image.}

With PED so rife in other sports, it would be naive for people to think that some footballers do not also take such illegal supplements to help their careers.

VERY interesting Ed. If correct then West Ham and Bournemouth took massive gambles on him. Still think, if he is turning the corner on a problem or even if he has genuinely been injury prone then a pay as you play is a definite option.

{Ed001's Note - they did take a big gamble and both of them backfired as he was a flop which is why he is available.}
