Cork I never said that it was purely formations that win matches, obviously players are a part of the winning team. You made the point of formations don't win matches and have nothing to do with it, but players do everything. That's not exactly correct is it? Other wise what would be the point of a manager. You can't pick 11 players on a Saturday and just say go out play wherever you want and let's hope for the best. That's my point!

trouble with monk is formation. why he never chnaged from the same formation was big downfall. personally I'd of liked to of seen a 4-4-3-2. if we'd of tried that I think we would of had a better chance of winning most games. in fact why no manager has ever tried this formation is beyound me.
they must all be proper thick on serious note anyone doubting formation importance. look at chelsea and their improvement with wing back formation (which is my fav still on footie manager and just lead Leeds to our third prem league win and back to back champs league wins)

My point was you play a formation to suit your squad. Don't start playing three at the back just because curahee says so, especially not towards the end of a season with no practice on training ground! Because in his words "try something different " enough said.

One more point curahee. Be careful what you wish for because if we lose Monk we will probably be back to square one. Especially with cellinos track record of hiring managers.

Formation and players need to work for each other. Not all formations work with all players. I'll share a couple of experiences. I coached a great team (twice qualified for nationals) with a phenomenal defence.
The week before a tournament in the US I lost my 5 best players as they were chosen to represent Atlantic Canada. I drilled what players I had left to play very defensive. Every man behind the ball style. It worked a dream we played the 7th ranked team in the US and lost 1-0 to a deflected free kick.
On possession it should honestly have been 20 for them and we were lucky to get nil. But it worked. With a full team we tried 3 at the back against a team we beat by 6 and 5 earlier in the year and lost 2-1. We'd worked on the system in training but it didn't translate.
I guess my point is not all formations work with a group of players and a coach's job is to assess what he thinks works. We don't see them in training so have less of a clue than Monk!

Bermondsey if we'd have played that formation you're right, we would win every match. mainly because we'd have three more players than every other team playing with 11 lol

Cana, you touched on my previous point that at some point we have to have faith in Monk that if he takes off Viera and puts on Grimes either he has seen something on the training pitch or his medication has worn off. We are not privy to all he knows and sees so we need to keep the faith and back the man.

exactly Matt I can not believe anyone has thought of this. they should sack monk for being dumb and sticking with the same old 11 men on the pitch lark

BE. You are so selfish. Why can't you at least tell us what drugs you are on so we could all get some 😁
