RM is certainly very good going forward, but I have heard some express concerns about his defensive attributes, strength and recovery pace - perhaps the Club feels that the Champ may be his ceiling. It may be that on further consideration they preferred the defensive abilities and higher level experience of Charlie Taylor, to at least help us get out of this league - or they could have identified someone else they see as a better able to cut it at the higher level.

In going to Saints, Manning is rejoining his old gaffer, so it was always a distinct possibility he’d choose that move, despite the rumours he’d set his heart on Leeds - which could possibly have been put about by his agent to help convince Saints to stump up a really decent wage offer, rather than just assume he’d be keen to work with Russell Martin again.

1) linking up with RM again

2) he would have been offered a good salary competitive or better than others

And 3) why would any good player choose an in flux delayed hamstrung regime change Leeds United over a very stable ready Southampton club.
