Gruev is out long term with a knee injury on his meniscus. He will have surgery over the next few days and will be reassessed.

Gruev has been a rock solid player in midfield and when we lost him last season, we hit a bad run of form.

Charlie crew will have a time to shine.

Yeah. Gruev as much a miss as amps.
Not ideal. Need to spend in jan in reinforcements.
Hope the youngsters can come in and do a job when needed. Don’t think Roth is a reliable starter. We shall see.

Not the Bulgarian I wanted injured. ?.

Gonna be a miss with no fit, dedicated DM in the squad. I don't think we should've bought another DM in the summer, so not going to complain about that. You simply can't account for two long term injuries to players in the same position. However, it does raise the question of why are we playing BOTH of our ONLY TWO DMs every game if we have no back up for either? Have thought all along, as have others, that we should've been playing one 6 and one 8. Obviously will never know now, but seems like we may have mitigated or avoided this situation by using a 6 and an 8 so we had back up for either position. I digress.

I think Crew is very capable, but it's certainly a big ask to expect him to do that job and do it reliably until Jan considering he's barely had any minutes in first team footy and he's a different profile to Gruev and Amps. I do think if push comes to shove, we can use hin there, though.

Smart move would be obviously to give Crew more minutes going forward but also bring in a free agent. Cristoph Kramer, who Farke managed at Monchengladbach, is being talked about. Very experienced with 10 years at the club. Another would be Cheickou Kouyate, who left Forest in the summer.

Whatever happens this decision needs to be right as we are in a pretty tricky spot right now in terms of squad depth.

Gruev and Amps out

But no top 2 excuses

Farke and available players need to ensure they get at least a draw tonight at Sunderland

And

Beat Sheff Utd at home game after.

Kramer would be useful, if nothing else he could set an example to Crew.

You’d hope Kramer would be up for working with Farke again. Farke has said he doesn’t like to bring in free agents in October as it takes so long to get them fit and integrated in the squad, but if Kramer’s been keeping himself in shape in hope of being signed on a free, Farke May feel more comfortable bringing him in due to his familiarity with the tactics etc. with his height, Kramer could also cover at CB if absolutely needed, having played 4 full games there before, including once for Farke at Monchengladbach.

It would seem much more risky not to bring in a free agent to strengthen the cover. If someone was to come in this weekend and had kept fit enough they’d have an outside chance of being in v Blades after almost two weeks clear just training. As things are, Tanaka would seem likely to be required to play at least 70 mins after fairly minimal recovery time from a game v Australia and flight from Japan - leaving him more susceptible to getting injured too. The Blades game would also be a very tricky one for Crew to be thrown into for his first competitive first team appearance.

Dill, I’d agree that we could not reasonably have expected the Club to bring in another DM in the summer, but it would perhaps have been sensible to bring another right sided CB who also had experience of playing at DM, rather than having Amps, as one of only two DMs, being first choice cover at RCB.

Of course Farke may have had it in mind to transition into having only one DM, and it’s frustrating that with Tanaka seemingly being worked towards being in the starting 11, we may well have transitioned after the forthcoming international break. Had Tanaka been signed much earlier in the window, Farke would have been able manage workload better and possibly avert the current crisis.

Agree with baz not having our first choice starting pair in midfelid is not excuse

Any team is this weak leauge could cope with that.

Berma . losing EA and IG sucks ( much like your KP and Bielsa posts) .

But it is what it is

A competent manager still gets LUFC up.

Question for Berma

Berma if/ when it doesn't work out with Farke

I guess you would be very content with ( tne " great" ) Paul Heckingbottom as Farke's eventual successor.?

Every other team has at least 25 in their squads - we have just 23. We are particularly light at CB and DM/ CM, critical positions to establish control of the central battleground. We have just 7 in total when all fit, amongst our like rivals Burnley have 12, Blades 10, Sunderland 11, Boro 11 and Baggies 10. We are ridiculously exposed to injuries in those combined positions - so in that respect we can’t be considered to be like ‘any team’ who should cope with the injuries we face. Not forgetting that Rodon has been struggling with various knocks over the last few weeks and Struijk is still more or less returning from a long lay-off with injury.

Anyone who has named 25 players cannot recruit a free agent. A free agent can only play if they can be placed in a squad. That might be why some teams have “spaces. ”.
