Don't think the statement by the club, that Gio was persistent and adamant that he wanted to leave Leeds, is very professional.
Of course he wanted to leave Leeds for a premier league club. Every player would.
And if they had offered him a better contact as soon as Brighton showed interest, they may have been able to prevent it.
Losing Gio was their fault. Sounds to me like they are trying to sour his reputation and avert blame. Poor show.

Agree, Aus. They knew the contra t situation and could have offered him a new one once Cry left or after the first Brighton offer was rejected.
Tell him you're re building the team around him. He's the man. Offer more money. A nice little bonus and a no-promotion clause that's higher than the current release clause, say £50m+. That way it shows belief in the teams ability to get promoted with him there as the talisman. And it will give him some assurance that he'll only be playing in the champo one more season at the most.
20 Aug 2024 06:00:40
Disagree there Aus. I don’t think the club will have been happy with that clause, and will have made offers of suitable value to have it removed, prior to it being triggered. In line with what you’re saying tho, why would a player accept its removal if it helps get PL football. The club are simply saying that they tried to persuade him to stay, which they will have done, but to no avail. The PL, it’s global audience, it career development opportunities, and it’s money, always wins in these circumstances.
20 Aug 2024 06:24:37
Tried 3 weeks too late bright. They do not even need to tell him about offers coming in until release clause. So he would have been none the wiser and most likely to accept an improved contract.
20 Aug 2024 06:53:36
Imo none of Rutter, Summerville or Gray and their agents would have accepted any change to their contracts .
They all knew what they were doing
#offtoEPLclubs.
20 Aug 2024 06:57:36
Disagree. Don’t think Rutter had any intention of leaving. Or Gray. Cry did.
20 Aug 2024 07:25:27
Rutter and Gray both chose to leave Aus.
20 Aug 2024 07:56:40
Speculation, speculation, speculation, nobody knows the truth and probably never will.
Pointless exercise to guess it.
That actual fact is that he’s gone and he is no longer a Leeds United player and we move on. No one player is bigger than the club and Rutter most definitely wasn’t.
20 Aug 2024 08:08:01
Not true.
Great was the sacrificial finance lamb that they needed to sell. The fact that he went to a prem team was not of his own making.
Gio was a result of poor contract management.
Neither asked to go. Neither showed any intention of going. Both went cause the situation arose that they could. Nothing to do with them or their agents. Clubs fault. Plain and simple.
20 Aug 2024 08:11:24
Agree 100 that no player is bigger than the club . definitely
but naive of anyone to ignore the facts that
1) not one of those 3 players chose to stay
2) no-one of those players chose to renegotiate / renegotiated their contracts end of season or during window
And
3) ALL three players form (ideally and very conveniently for them) fell off a cliff last 11 matches
which forked up promotion
Anyways.
20 Aug 2024 08:17:15
Lol Aus . so naive.
20 Aug 2024 08:24:19
That’s an opinion Aus, you don’t know what happened.
He didn’t have to leave if he really wanted to stay, that’s the way I see it.
20 Aug 2024 09:32:13
You are naive. Both of you. Not 1 single player in the league would turn prem down. You’re making up stories.
If you would turn down more money and prospects than you currently have, you are either lying or a bit dim.
They were pretty much forced out by need and mismanagement.
It’s my opinion.
And no dribble especially from bazil will change it.
20 Aug 2024 09:59:03
Lmao Dame Aus, your contradictory posts do amuse one. ??.
20 Aug 2024 10:02:14
Again I agree with baz.
There is nothing the club could do, offer contracts earlier…. They wouldn’t of been signed. Offer more money… and go skint because we ain’t in the prem?
Build a team around…. Still not a prem team. Facts are we had some premier league quality players and they have gone… it’s an unavoidable part of football.
Happens to Brighton as well as their players go to Liverpool, Chelsea, or arsenal. We are not in a strong financial or footballing position, so we can only do what we can do.
Lucky we had these good players to sell and avoid a points deduction. Now we rebuild and move forward as all clubs do all the time.
20 Aug 2024 10:22:29
Aus mate you’re contradicting yourself there. On one hand you say Leeds forced him out, then say no player would turn down the opportunity of EPL football.
20 Aug 2024 10:50:24
Indeed Corkster 100
Dame Aus often contradicts in his posts . I have been saying so for years.
20 Aug 2024 11:06:24
Excellent post Berm, Brighton have been a feeder club for Chelsea just recently including manager Potter. It’s all about the richest in the food chain and how you can ‘lose’ your spending to comply with the financial constraints, regulations.
We’re not Poundland level, but probably hovering around Asda level, time to open that back pocket now.
20 Aug 2024 11:31:31
If Rutter wanted to go, I think it was foolish on his behalf. I get that he would want to return to PL level, but why not hone his skills or another year with a club that will play him, with fans that do love him?
He's going to PL level where he may not be played, he may not be good enough and he may damage his career by doing so.
Leeds flog a lot of talent, but how often does that talent flourish and turn into superstars?
{Ed001's Note - unless he handed in a written transfer request, he gets 5% of the transfer fee, that will be why he is happy to move. 5% gets split between any clubs that he spent time with before the age of 18. Just to point out that Leeds will have lost 10% of the transfer fee immediately, even before taxes and agent fees, solicitor fees etc are taken into account.}
20 Aug 2024 13:02:34
My point is we should have tried contracts negotiations earlier, Bermo. Neither you or I know if he would've signed one. Supposition on both our parts, but they definitely should have tried at the earliest opportunity.
And yes, build our team around the player that was our best player at the time. Seems pretty logical to me.
20 Aug 2024 13:34:33
how do you know we didn't try new contracts earlier, Dill?
20 Aug 2024 14:05:14
Reports suggest they only tried when Brighton made that final bid. But obviously I can't know for sure.
20 Aug 2024 16:17:55
I suspect they probably did offer a new contract at the beginning but because Leeds are in the Championship he was advised not to. The last attempt offer I imagine was in desperation.
Again, its something we’ll never know.
20 Aug 2024 17:38:20
It doesn't matter what the club knew, divulged or tried to keep secret; these players all have managers and agents and they 100% know what is going on; I could guarantee, whatever was in those contracts, a disclosure clause would have been there, whereby the club must disclose bids or interest in the player.
20 Aug 2024 17:56:43
All these players have contracts as we have learned to our cost that have been very beneficial to the player [and not to the club]; no player would choose to have a worse contract. These were "EPL" contracts and no Championship contract is going to displace that in my opinion.
They would have been fools to have entertained the idea of renegotiating their contracts.
The irony is however, had we been promoted, there would have been an orderly line up of players demanding "better" contracts.
It's how the world works sadly.
