So Southgate gone who do you vote for.

Agree0 Disagree0

Got mixed feelings. He's done a fantasic job from where we were 8 years ago when he took charge. I believe he needs more respect for what he's achieved but can see his negative style turns fans against him.

It’s a very big call but if the FA could persuade Potch or Postecoglou to take the post, then quite possibly England might achieve their first trophy in 60 years.
They are certainly outside chances but the FA have stated that they will be looking at foreign coaches as well as English.
It’s worth noting that no foreign manager of an international team has ever won the World Cup.
It wouldn’t surprise me though that the FA would see Harry (out of work waiting for England job) Potter as their choice.

Clearly Gareth seems a very nice gentleman BUT I have not enjoyed his tactics and negative outlook for many a year now, so much so I actually missed a couple of the games and watched highlights something unheard of previously.

Mr Bielsa would be interesting, but personally I think Eddie Howe for his attacking intent, but Managers who act like their players are their best mates really p me off! .

No time normally, for Mr Jamie Carragher but he has a point that none of the so called top players Kane, Foden, Stones, Rice etc…played at anything like their club level with the exceptions of Saka and Palmer and Guehi was just a wonderful surprise.

Currently there is far too much player power Bellingham of course is a generational talent but clearly knackered after twenty minutes of each game and behaved like a petulant teenager.

Battle of the Ps. Poch, Potter or Postecoglou. It'll surely be Harry.

16 Jul 2024 14:51:25
Potter shoe in.

16 Jul 2024 15:37:49
Southgate can hold his head high but he lacked the killer instinct to get us over the line.
If it has to be an Englishman, my choice would have been Eddie Howe. If a johnny foreigner is allowed then u got to knock on Pep's door surely.

I know it won’t be the person I’m about to suggest which is a great pity as I feel he would be perfect for us - Klopp.

Knows the players, knows the premiership, a proven winner who knows how to change things up when Plan A isn’t working etc.

Would handle the media and the FA (which is vital in that role) , and would suit him personally as he doesn’t want the day to day involvement of club management anymore.

He would get to travel the world (could take the family with him too) , and pop over to watch games whenever he wanted to.

But unfortunately it won’t be him - knowing our FA it’ll be Funtime Frankie or Clueless Stevie G, or how about David Beckham?

I suspect Howe is the FA's and the "fans" choice. Wouldn't surprise me if they consider Gerard [and Lampard! ]. None of them mine by the way.

I don't subscribe to the negative tactics as the excuse to be honest. These are supposedly "world class" [the best ever? ] players who are all capable of changing the game in a moment [apparently]; surely, they can think for themselves and adapt to the game situation?

Even if Pickford was told at the start of the game to kick the ball aimlessly long [because that's what he did all-night! ], they must use their own intelligence to see that what he is doing isn't working and adapt / change. Pickford was probably told not to f*** around in his own box, which is different.

I concede England didn't play well, but again we try and make excuses. Apparently, we had the easy side of the draw. We only got through with last minute goals etc. Seems that it is perfectly fine for Spain to get to the final beating the likes of Albania and Georgia, an own goal to beat Italy; a last minute goal to see off Germany and then do us with 4 minutes to go. Seems to me that they had as much luck as us?

Nonetheless, they were just better; players individually were better / braver and better collectively as a team.

The problem for the next manager is that the players he has [will] to pick from, all play for "world class" managers who are genuinely serial winners [not always fairly]; will they respect an England Manager who isn't; who very likely does not even have a domestic record to speak of.

I don't think any of the English candidates will make the slightest bit of difference for our prospects of winning anything of note.

In all honesty; I think it's been about as good as it gets for us.

Even though he has no real record of serial success; Potch would be my choice, but I suspect the FA [despite what they say], do not fancy a foreign coach.

Should through a pot load of money at Pep. Could you imagine him managing this group of players, great attacking football.
Bielsa would be great though, wouldn’t it?

16 Jul 2024 17:09:08
Ohh MG, what a suggestion:)
Could you imagine what we'd be like with him in charge.

4 nil up at half time in most games, winning 5-3 and the end of it.

Throwing caution to the wind against Brazil, Argentina and France - please make it happen:)

Is that the Bielsa ( Uruguay ) that were very lucky to draw with Brenty's mob Canada in 3rd place game

Listen I like Bielsa, appreciate what he achieved with Leeds, in 3 seasons not 4th season of course

but some on here seem to think he is a world beater . facts state he simply is not.

What's Pep salary at Citeh

What's Howe salary at Saudi Barcodes

A gazillion times more than an FA England coach salary I expect.

16 Jul 2024 20:34:36
Baz, according to Sky Sports just now, Howe signed a new Multi-year extension last Summer. He currently earns twice what Southgate was being paid by the FA.

16 Jul 2024 20:37:49
The football was fun to watch more than anything, Baz. Until that last season obviously. Was just nice to enjoy watching us.

16 Jul 2024 20:38:30
A good point made earlier was that given the amount spent on the St George’s park setup (£125M) for England player and coach development; appointing a foreign manager would be an admission that it isn’t working.

16 Jul 2024 20:43:04
Gareth's fundamental style of football has to be front +centre of reason as to what went wrong .

It's not wrong to suggest he drowned out creativity for a style of play that negated excitement onfield .

Regardless of all the close calls he escaped from, he still reverted to type next game .

Keeping faith with a certain few players even when it was clear they weren't performing is cause and effect now .

A lot of performances weren't a surprise let's be honest, we seen some poor football prior to championship.

Potter or Eddie for me will be next imo.

16 Jul 2024 21:01:21
I wouldn’t say Bielsa is a world beater, but the football would be far more exciting than it has been recently!
I think we would have had a better chance of beating Spain with attacking foosball with those players rather than the style of football Southgate adopts.

16 Jul 2024 22:20:31
It’s interesting when you compare Southgate’s record. For all the negative style of play claims, his goal scored record the best of all, outdoing “attack minded” managers like Keegan, Venables, Hoddle etc.

16 Jul 2024 22:29:16
Good points / posts Ani, Dill, Chris and MG.

17 Jul 2024 01:40:06
Play more international games against the minnows these days, Ani. They even made the Nations League especially to fit those lower nations involved against the big hitters.

17 Jul 2024 07:23:40
Pep, KlipKlopp or Marcelo. The FA can ask every English footie fan to chip in a couple of quid per year to pay their salary.
