Bit of a cheek (actually a lot of a cheek) Liz Truss saying she would channel the spirit of Don Revie if she won the Tory leadership and became PM, because ‘we need to win’. To suggest The Don was driven only by winning shows a very shallow understanding of his true spirit.

Agree0 Disagree0

Plus she is a massive c#nt.

What was he driven by other than trying to always win, e. g. ". we will the league next season. without losing a game. "

Geniune question?

Cluey Great post.

Ani Don was primarily driven by fostering a family spirit among the dressing room and putting on a show for the crowd. He personified true Yorkshire grit and determination but also was a unique entertainer. He was warm, generous and likeable, a father figure with ahead of his time tactics. Wasn't just about winning but playing with a particular style and philosophy which set us apart from every other team in the land. Such was his power which was effervescent and transcended, his name and our club are the first thing most people think about when the 1970 decade is mentioned.

Well said George!

Ani - yes he always wanted to win in football, but he also realised you needed to build every part of the Club to enable the first team to win, and put measures (some of them very innovative) in place to do that. He also built a culture within the Club, immortalised in the words of Billy Bremner (the man Don wanted to become manager when he left) ‘Side before self’.

Unfortunately Liz Truss seems to have become very much a female clone of Boris Johnson (not Maggie Thatcher - which would have been unfortunate in itself) . I knew her very well in her pre-Tory days, and struggle to fully understand what has become of the person I knew then. The spirit of Boris is the total antithesis of what The Don really stood for.

Revie actually wanted Giles to succeed him as manager, not Bremner.

Not too sure we played with style back then apart from the last couple of Revies seasons when he “took the shackles off”
Dour, win at all costs and sit back at 1-0 are some of the words I’ve heard said about the Revie era. Apparently the players were frustrated with this and Leeds did eventually start to really entertain later on.
Nonetheless Revie made LUFC in to a proper football club as previously rugby league and cricket were bigger sports in Leeds area. He was the man that made Leeds great.

Yes very well said George and Clu and ?.

Cork you are correct about the Don wanting Giles to succeed him

But ' dour ' under Revie? . no way!
Yes of course there were some games that were dour/ dull but even the best teams have those.

Leeds were blessed with very SKILLFUL technical players who kept possession of the ball very well and generally most games were entertaining to very entertaining, Leeds scored regularly 70 to 85 ish goals ( and a couple of mid 60 goal seasons) for 12 seasons or so under Revie and many of these goals were beautifully created.

Baz I’m a bit young to remember the Revie days and I’ve always felt unfortunate in that. I do recall a few Leeds players of that time saying in the early days of Dons reign Leeds could have been less defensive after say going a goal up and that they were better than that especially away from home. However after the shackles were taken off Leeds became what they always should have been, the best and most attractive team to watch in Europe. As George said the family spirit instilled in to the whole club from top to bottom was key in our success alongside exceptional fitness and dietary requirements made Revie a man before his time.
I hope I didn’t offend any fans from that era as I was only trying to point out that if Revie had let the lads off the leash a few years earlier Leeds probably would have had more success.
Watch Jonny Giles on Off the Ball on YouTube to get a recent insight of those glory days.
