Last night created more questions and apparently no actual answers. I know there is a call from some quarters to bring the kids along slowly but they must be blooded sometime and last nigh was perfect. In fact it was none of the U23s that can be criticized. All the ones not turning it on are all senior pros and the 5 who I see need a rest, for reasons both mental and physical, showed no signs of recapturing last seasons form. For goodness sake do not anybody downplay the effort of the kids last night and also never critisize any new player, esp an U23, on just a few minutes when the game has gone and all we can do is chase a result. In fact last night will have taught a couple of them a lesson, that the gap between U23s and big boys is definitely there. This should not discourage them but merely spur them on to bridge that gap and become regulars in the not too distant future. The biggest problem to this happening is MBs stubborn loyalty, at times an endearing trait but also a major failing. Why he perseveres with with players who consistently underperform, beggars belief. No, last night could be viewed as not a defeat but merely a learning curve IF the powers that be can see the lesson.

Good post Leodis!

Arsenal had kids out as well but still won. What does that tell you?

Agree with your sentiment on the kids Leo hugely important that they are shielded from unfair expectations .

However we now find it a NECESSITY to blood them as oppose to opportunity . This is where my problem is, they are fully aware we are in a pickle so it's a guarantee that they will feel extra pressure .

This scenario is scandalous in current PL schedule, yes injuries happen but most clubs have back up, we don't and as a result we are where we are

Bielsa has never encountered these demands + standard over a sustained period of time before in his career, yet he is so stubborn to now change must seem to him like an admittance of poor managerial decision so this is the conundrum we now find ourselves in

And radz should never be left forget his Forshaw comment . Outrageous + infuriating.

Let's hope things change sharpish.

Forshaw could actually still come good. Thought he played ok yesterday- better than Klich by far.

The issue I had with the comment is he has not played in 2 years so PL football will be too much for him in the time we need him to make a meaningful impact Alfie, and that lies with the board . O Brien should have been signed at very least, yet our great leader wanted him on the never never and was rightly told yabba Dabba do 1 .

In fairness, that's an embarrassing way for a Prem league club to be operating when the hand flies out to take Rupert's lolly.

Not sure exactly what point you were trying to make with your point about Arsenal also playing kids, but winning. What do you think it tells us?

Apols, in case not entirely clear, my previous comment on this thread is addressed at Alf.

Tells us that playing kids is not an excuse for losing. Bad performances and poor team selection causes losses.

27 Oct 2021 23:08:17
Yep you're right Chris - stupidity not strengthening over summer and the buck stops with the board.

Actually Alf, it tells us that Arsenal’s ‘kids’ are older than, and have a lot more experience than ours.

Of the starters, Smith-Rowe (21 years old) had played 47 times over 3 seasons for Arsenal before this season, including 18 games in the Europa League. Martinelli (20) 49 times over 2 seasons, including 13 Europa League ties. Nketiah (22) 67 times over 4 seasons, including 15 Europa League.

Their ‘young’ subs may be new to Arsenal, but they have a lot of senior league experience. Varela Tavares (21) had played 42 times for Benicia over 2 seasons, including 5 in the Europa League. Lokonga (22) had played 61 times over 4 seasons for Anderlecht, including 2 Europa League.

At present we have a large sinkhole sitting in midfield. The problem should be (should have been) adressed and a driving creative player brought in or promoted.
