Shackleton one of the few players who came out of the game on Saturday with any pride stats included six tackles, five interceptions and completing 83% of his passes inside the opposition half. Good to see him continuing his improvement. I think I'd have preferred to see Shacks in as DM instead of Struijk but of course we have no other right back available.

Alf we do have another right back in Cody Drameh ; whether he gets a chance in the first team remains to be seen.

Alf - we do have another perfectly good RB who could have stepped up - as said previously, Drameh could, and perhaps should have been played at RB/ RM on Saturday, freeing up Shack to play as a nominal DM. According to LUTV’s audio commentary we were actually playing with three at the back, as usual when facing two forwards - with Struijk at the middle of the three, and Klich nominal DM, though his instincts are generally to get involved in the play more forwards than that.

I'm not sure you can count a player who has never played for the firsts. One day maybe but he must not be getting opportunities for a reason.

Baz, clue' agree again. Why buy a promising RB and not play him?

Alf - your looked for reason lies not in any inadequacy on Drameh’s part, but rather in two of Bielsa’s traits. Firstly his preference (as he himself has said) to look first to established first teamer for ‘solutions, wanting to put any pressure on their shoulders rather than on less experienced players. Secondly his tendency to feel ‘guilt’ for not providing opportunities to those players most deserving of them. Shack has figured with the first team previously, and according to reports was one of the most impressive in the bleep test and in other preseason work, and had previously played at RB. Bielsa evidently felt able to put the pressure on Shack to fill the RB slot in Ayling’s absence from the position, either when playing CB or injured, and would have felt ‘guilt’ at not giving the opportunities to play which he deserved (which could possibly have led to very well thought of and Bielsaball proficient academy graduate leaving) by playing Drameh instead. In a recent interview, Cresswell said that he and the other u23 (including Drameh) recognise that they can’t (and shouldn’t) expect to just to walk into the first team here and are content to wait for when Bielsa believes to be the right time. Drameh knows he was specifically recruited to the heir to Ayling, and will trust the process in place for that to happen.

In my view, last Saturday would have been a good time to bring in Drameh for his first taste of the first team, allowing Shack to move into the midfield, either to take Tyro out of the firing line or to give Dallas a chance for some time and space to deal with whatever off field issues are going on. Maybe Bielsa will come to see things that way (perhaps against Norwich) , but maybe not - doubtless there will be other factors that will come into consideration.

I can see Forshaw starting at DM in our upcoming games and if he stays fit and can still cut it at this level that would be the natural solution as he is a DM. That means Shacks can continue at rb and Drahmeh is not needed.

19 Oct 2021 10:32:53
BTW I never said Drahmeh was inadequate (although as an untested player we certainly can't day the opposite) merely that there will be a reason he is not getting picked.

19 Oct 2021 11:19:23
I know you didn’t say it in your recent post but in previous posts you have repeatedly suggested that in your view Uncle Victor keeps on buying young players who Bielsa clearly doesn’t rate as good enough as he doesn’t play them.

19 Oct 2021 11:27:10
And, Alf, although your latest posts didn’t specifically say Drameh was in adequate, you do seem to imply that Bielsa’s reason for not playing him most likely relate to Bielsa’s current judgment on Drameh’s readiness for first team action.

19 Oct 2021 13:29:56
Of course. If Bielsa thought he was ready thenhe would play him surely? He isn't playing ergo Bielsa doesn't think he is ready.

Not necessarily Alf, as he has been prioritising giving gametime to Shack and yes, frustratingly, still to Tyro. As Drameh’s u23 minutes seem to have been reduced in recent weeks, hopefully that is an indication that he is getting closer to meaningful involvement with the first team.
