Alf - you’ll have spotted Brentford have dipped into the transfer market today. Just brought Frank Onyeka, a 22 year old CDM/ CM, from FC Midtjylland. Looks a very good signing, pretty rapid for someone playing those roles. Even if we’d gone in for him we would have had no chance, as the two clubs have the same owner. Also expected to pick up CB Kristoffer Ajer from Celtic soon.

The Bees were always going to be busy, certainly not intending on going straight back down.

Some Toon online fanzine is suggesting their lot had an agreement in place two months ago to buy Ajer, but Ashley has seemingly been distracted by the continuing saga of the Saudi takeover/ pirate satellite case. Geordie fans getting very twitchy, not happy at a ‘relegation rival’ being allowed to steal a march on them in the transfer market. Bees currently third favourite for relegation, and Toon are fifth. If the Bees pull in a few more decent signings, there’ll be a few more teams getting worried.

I’m kinda straying from the subject a bit, but is it just me who has a sincere dislike of Thomas Frank? Dunno what it is, I just find him highly unlikeable!? But yes Clue, two very good signings for them! Ajer and Pontus make a great CB pairing.

I can't like anyone who chews with their mouth open.

Bright - your profession to have sincere dislike for Frank has got me wondering what an insincere dislike would be like.

Allegedly both Newcastle and Brentford are interested in Jens Cajuste, a young Swedish CDM/ CM at Midtjylland. Seems unlikely that Brentford would raid its sister club for another player in the same position as Onyeka, but either way, it seems unlikely their owner would help out the Toon by selling them a decent player.

Brentford may start to find it a little more difficult to turn such big profits now they are in the Prem but they do seem to have a knack for finding players for very little money that go on to do really well. I can see them staying up even with their Championship team but certainly if they add players they could surprise a few people.

Alf - part of Brentford’s success in recruitment was picking up players from the lesser European leagues. That is made a lot more difficult, unless you’re buying an established international, under the post-Brexit rules.

It is possible to indirectly circumvent those rules if your owner also owns a club in one of the better European leagues, as the player you want can be bought by that club and then, so long as they play a significant percentage of the games for that club, they can be transferred to your British club the following season.

However, Brentford can’t use FC Midtjylland in this way, as the Danish Superliga is itself a Band 5 league.

If Radrizzani had been able to buy Salernitana, that club could have provided a route to bring in talent from lesser leagues, but only while it stayed in Serie A, as Serie B is in Band 6.

Of course the metrics Brentford use will still be able to identify the undervalued, or underperforming and with something to prove ‘talent’ they’ve generally sought, but just not from as many cheap sources as before.

Despite this, I reckon they’ll have a decent chance of staying up.
