If we can get past Denmark, Italy have shown tonight that they can be badly exposed at the back with pace. Also seemed that Spain had greater physicality than Italy in midfield. Spain should have won in normal time.

Disagree (about who should have won) clueless. Although Spain had the better of play had Italy taken their chances first half it could have easily been 2-0 after 45 mins.
Tipped Italy before the tourney started and I still think, though they have flaws, they are favourites. Spain looked a lot better than anyone we have played so far, we will need to go up a couple of gears if we get to the final.

The one thing we don't have when attacking- pace. By the time England lumber forward Italy would have 10 men behind the ball every time. Provided we can get past the Danes of course.

Italy did work their socks off. Was impressed with their effort although still champs at diving and play acting.

I was surprised no body fell over on the way to take a PK.

Gummie - you must have been watching a different match. Italy only had one shot in the first half, by Emerson in the 45th minute. There was the offside attempt in the 4th minute. Conversely, Spain had two very clear chances, for Oyazabal and Olmo, and got 3 other shots away from decent positions. So how do you reckon Italy could have been 2-0 up after 45 minutes. In the remainder of the match, Spain had 11 further shots (including Morata’s goal and another cast iron opportunity for Oyazabal) , to Italy’s 6. They also had 70% possession overall.

Alf, you’re correct that pace has not a been a general facet of England’s game, but we do have it in our locker, and on occasion pace and movement have been injected into the play, with some goals and other opportunities being created.

Aus, your right that Italy worked their socks off, particularly having only had 30 possession over 120+ minutes. and hopefully, if we can get through tonight, and do so in 90 minutes, we may have a little more in the tank on Sunday, despite having one day less to recover.

They had the keeper out of the net at one point and the player took an extra touch then passed plus the effort that hit the post was after a couple of extra touches that took him into a worse shooting position, I know they didn't have many shots, that's my point, they got into good positions twice and did the wrong thing (Spain culpable of a similar one too tbf) . As I said Spain played better but if Italy had actually shot when they should have they could have easily scored.

It's progression you need not possession Spain have loads of the latter but if they where captains of ships they would never get out of the harbour MOT everyone come onnnn England.

Wigan - So getting more clear chances and more shots than Italy was not progression.

I know you can take a lot of what pundits say with a pinch of salt, but the majority of those I’ve heard talking about the match also felt Spain were the better side and should have won.

You needed to open your eyes and mind. I fully expected Italy to boss that game in terms of chances created and for Spain’s tickitacka possession to be repelled with ease by the Italian defence. but from what I actually saw neither of those things happened. Sound like you ‘saw’, what you (and I) expected to happen.
