The way I see it is that it wouldn’t make any difference if Paddy had been selected anyhow. England will not win the Euros for one reason only and that is Southgate. Nice chap but he’s a loser. We do have an exceptional crop of potential world class players, individually. But what good is that when the man at the helm lacks experience and winning mentality. I’m sorry but the best England will achieve will be quater finals, France, Germany, Belgium and Portugal to name a few are better equipped and managed than England. The previous World Cup semi final place most definitely flattered to deceive.
Just imagine being coached by one the great footballing minds in Bielsa and then to Southgate! Just drawing some perspective to the ultimate disappointment of playing for England under Southgate.
Bamford’s time would be better spent on a relaxing sunny vacation sipping a Margarita.

OP Agree with the overall sentiment of your post. I believe Southgate is distinctly average. However, I disagree with your conclusion. I personally believe England can and will win the Euros. We have the personnel to do so for the first time in ages. I can then see the English media portraying Southgate as some type of Bielsaesque demigod footballing genius but that won't be the truth. Soon after he'll then be knighted. Separately, on the subject of the squad, I actually think it's offensive that Ayling wasn't picked but criminal that Harrison wasn't. In George opinion, Jack should feel more aggrieved at missing out than Paddy.

That is very optimistic George, I do believe with the right manager with this current crop of players we could win but not even with a huge slice of luck do i think that will be possible, my instinct tells me that. Every time I see Southgate I get an image of a rabbit stuck in the headlights. We have the players but not the manager and you definitely need both to win a top international tournament.

Attacking options 2nd to none,
Too safe, too defensive, 4 2 3 1, with too holding midfielders, could so easily be 4 1 3 2, wing backs (chilwell, trent) bombing on, grealish mount foden behind kane and rashford
But it won't happen
2nd rnd v France, Germany or Portugal IF (big if) we win the group.

Agree Rich, you just know that Southgate will take the safe option and will be too defensive. When you look at our attacking options I think you’ve got to be more cavalier.
Absolutely no way will we win the Euros, I’d stick the house, wife and dog on that bet.

Certainly do remember’96. A Uni friend arranged her wedding on the day of England v Scotland 🤯 - with the reception due to start the same time as the match. Guests were left hanging around for the photos to be taken, not knowing how long they’d be and whether it was worth trying to find a TV somewhere at the venue.
