Seen a few posts about our new signings getting up to speed and getting used to the english game. Our only first team signings are international footballers. They'll take time to get used to what's required from them in bielsas style of play, we've seen that with a lot of players already. The thing I don't get is the whole, english game, talk. Football is football, pep, wenger, klopp, and next arteta, have all destroyed this so called english game, even bielsa and nuno in probably the toughest league in the world. This myth of the english game doesn't exist, as there are so many different teams with different styles of play, you can't be telling me city, burnley, leeds, liverpool, stoke, rotherham, all play the same type of football, it doesn't exist. Our players will do as well as they are capable of and if they're not good enough the manager will send them packing.

It’s a great post Samo. The one thing I would say about “The English game”, is that it is played at a much greater intensity, with fewer “lame” passages of play, where players drop the pace, and take a breather. Like you say, the old English, physical game is long gone!

The only difference with the "English game" I can see is the action in every third of the pitch whereas the continentals have a habit of giving up the middle of the park and, at times, playing at a slower, more technical, pace. But I do tend to agree with you that the foreign imports both players and managers have homoginised our game and in the end it's all just Football!

Excellent posts Samo Brighty and Leo.

Agree all above. It’s a world game and while we have lost the physicality of yesteryear we still have higher tempo.

I know 1 thing English football wouldn't be same without them only aft look at England team MOT.

'The English game'isnt a particular style. I think it is the game as it is played in England, which is still quicker and more physical than in other leagues.

Samo By "English game", I don't mean the mid 1980s with Motty's sheepskin coat in all weathers, Big Ron Atkinson, Howard Kendall, Graeme Souness, jumpers for goalposts, flick ons at the near post with Mick Harford, Tony Cascarino scoring powerful headers or legendary poachers fastest to react over half a yard of space in a mudfest such as Tommy Tynan, Jimmy or Micky Quinn. I mean the modern game as it is now. You see the thing about 2020 is it's real, it's happening and it's right now. So by "English game", I mean the very successful changes and version brought by Wenger and carried on by Pep, Klopp etc. Fergie also improved the old style. Obviously not all teams have silky skill midfielders and a Ben White at the back. When Burnley get the ball, you don't think here comes their Manchester City type midfield, you think physicality and they'll rely on set pieces, corners etc. That part of the game still exists. In the Championship, there are other teams who are more physical than others such as Berm's beloved Millwall. The point is this. Newsflash. Wenger managed Arsenal for a quarter of a century and left a blueprint which isn't going away. The upper end of the English game is now fast, flowing and appealing on the eye hence the massive commercialization of the sport. The PL boast the best players. Liverpool are world class, favourites for everything, the best side in the world right now. If you tried to buy their front 3, you'd need minimum £600m. This is the modern English game I'm referring to so you're right when you say foreign coaches came in and destroyed the English myth but your remark is misleading and naive. These coaches are still here! This is the (new, if that makes things easier but it's been going on for years) English game at the highest level. Not all foreign players take to this quick demanding style and again from what I've seen I have concerns over Rodrigo and the fee paid.

Do you need a hug, George?

Yes Alf. Preferably from Hayley Atwell.

News just in though. I think this guy John Major could be the next leader of the Conservative Party.

He couldn't do any worse than the current guy could he?
