Just in from the Glenavon game. first a large pinch of salt as this was Irish league and not championship opposition but Dawson looked the part as did Mowatt but whoever played no 7 was awesome. Never seen him before but looked a Rolls Royce of a player, always available and economical with the ball and glided around the pitch. One for the future and I mean the immediate future. No hofball just slick passing football. The future seems much brighter!

Was it that Bianchi m8?

Agree0 Disagree0

No m8 not on the team sheet.

upsanddowns

Purver is an 18 yr old 2nd year academy player, plays either mid or CB apparently. Look good tough tackler along with OP'S guy Kalvin Philips Mowatt Dawson & Murphy a lot of emerging talent in Mid at present.

This is the team on our website that was travelling last night, could have been last minute changes but the list is below.

United: Kenny, Cairns, Berardi, Killock, Skelton, Coker, C Taylor, Denton, Cook, Booker, Purver, Philips, Mowatt, Dawson, Smith, Poleon, Swann, Stokes.

Find it difficult to see logic in letting Lees going on a free. Sell him by all means but gift him? He had a couple years left on his contract, has represented england u-21s and we don't have anyone other than Wooton whose powers are questionable, Killock and possibly Austin to join Pearce. I would have expected absolute minimum 150k in today's weird market. Does anyone have any theories on why a free transfer?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I guess Lees will be on less money with Wendies and the would be transfer fee will pay off the rest of his contract with Leeds.
I get the impression the Cellino is pretty tight with his money and won't give away anything for nothing, despite what it might look like.

Anyone know if viviani has signed or not? Hope so as he looks quality

Believable0 Unbelievable0

This is an ongoing mystery. I can only assume MC is going to announce several signings all at once (I wish)

Now why the hell are we selling, sorry giving away Tom Lees to Sheff Wednesday only to replace him with a player who has no experience in the championship.

Now most of you may want to raise that he didn't do so well last year and made a few mistakes, but I would rather have a player who is born and bred Leeds .

AND NO FEE? WHAT IS THE POINT OF THAT? Does not make financial sense.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree ds. Very strange he's going on a free transfer with two years left on his contract. OK he's had an indifferent 18 months but if he gets his confidence back is a top class championship CB. Personally I would of thought 400-600 grand a fair price for Tom.

None of our new signings have c'ship experience, lees has gone backwards over last two seasons and always looks vulnerable to me, good decision.

Agree0 Disagree0

Morph, I would disagree. But we are all entitled to our opinion.

It doesn't make financial sense to sell him. A fee should be sought for a 23 year old championship CB with 2 years left on his contract.

Additionally it doesn't make squad sense, even if he doesn't start and a new pairing is opted for. We still need a squad to challenge.

And yes he may have gone backwards over the last 2 years, but he is just 23 and just maybe he may go forward in the next year.

I fear this is just getting rid of a player because someone is interested and for the sake of it, to "release wages".

Ahh, well.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree that is a strange move not getting any money, but the right move in moving him on, we need to get rid of the under performers if we are to keep moving forwards, it just seems because he came through the system at Leeds that is tinged with disappointment as well.

My only concern is that we still have no more confirmed signings, I know we are close to signing two young players who appear to have real pedigree but there appears to be no fees involved, though obviously their wages will fairly high.

We moved on a lot of players in the summer and now Tom Lees and saved a lot of wages as a result. These again were all good decisions, we then signed some new players, but we must be well in credit so far as money is concerned as well as 11 million to spend from RMsi transfer.

Our transfer dealings seem to take an age to complete, we are waiting for paperwork seems to be the main reason. I would really like to see some positive business sooner rather than later we still need a centre back two wingers and a centre forward with not a lot of time left to bed them in before Millwall.

I wish Tom all the best but sorry not good enough to wear the Leeds shirt imo

I think it's a great decision and am delighted I've always felt that because Lees came through the youth setup he was given a huge amount of leeway.

If he wasn't a product of the youth system he'd have been shipped out after a year because he's constantly getting caught out and making terrible decisions which lead to goals conceded. With him gone I think that's about 10 goals less we'll concede this year.

I'd also like to mention I appreciate the level of commitment and effort Lees has given us during his career and genuinely wish him the best in his career but I feel he was never good enough to be a Leeds player.

Agree0 Disagree0

Tom lees is not as good as you all seem to think. Played in all our thrashings last season, 6-0, 5-1,4-0, 5-0 and 2-0 to rochdale. The lad can't defend.

Agree0 Disagree0

First of all GL to Lees in his new venture.

Not getting a fee is a bit strange especially from MC. A no fee now but with a heavy sell on fee or payment through appearances would make good financial sense. I can't believe it is as simple as have him to free up wages.

Agree0 Disagree0

D.s. I agree to a point whether he is worth a fee, maybe depending on wages for next two years, hard to say without knowing the facts.

Thought he would be a mainstay of our defence a year or so ago, but has fallen behind IMO.

Pearce has taken a bit to settle, but shows all the commitment I thought lees would being a leeds lad etc

It's an area we need to strengthen for sure. Pearce would get my vote for being captain, much better concentration

Spoken to a few Chesterfield supports and they all rate Cooper highly, a good all round centre back who's confident on the ball.

I'm sceptical about paying what Chesterfield want (1m) as he's only proven himself at league two level, but I hope we get him for 750k or less.

I am also a partly a chesterfield fan, been very depressing because the last two seasons I have been on holiday for both games! I went to about 7 chesterfield games last season and liam cooper is very very good, for his age he is good, he is not scared when the ball is at his feet and has great composure, even though he is small he wins a lot of headers. If we sign him he will be a great signing. Last thing, chesterfield are a lot worse to watch than leeds! They bloody pass the ball across the back 4 about 500 times before going forward!

Why are we not playing McDaid? If it is because he is only 18 then why are we signing Zan Benedicic as he is only 18?

Also, many players can handle it at that age, Alan Smith, Rooney, Barkley etc.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Maybe because he isn't good enough?

Agree0 Disagree0

Hes playing in milky bar cup for northen ireland he needs putting in first team against dundee even 45th min sub just to see if he can hack it. Leeds4life

Mcdaid is with NI atm, maybe he will break into the 1st team when he's back who knows!

Ive seen McDaid play 4 times (all be it on a lower league level) and he's impressed me EVERYTIME, he's an Alan Shearer type player (knocking the C/B off the ball he's like a rotweiller) chases everything and never gives defenders time to breath but still a bit lightweight as you would expect at 18 yrs of age.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2014 22:35:35
Andy, sounds like some trips to the gym are in order for McDaid. Dare I say big Matt Smith could look after him on the pitch. Sounds also to me even at this stage he could be a real threat as a supersub with 15 minutes left to play.

Agree0 Disagree0

George
Id say McDaid was sent to the gym the day he arrived, as for Smith he couldn't look after himself lol

Can anyone that has seen the friendlies give me a quick review on all the new lads

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Bianchi looks like what we need in midfield and could be a good playmaker at this level. Silverstri is a decent keeper also, apparently Doukara was good last night but I didn't go

Agree0 Disagree0

Austin was stand out player at Chesterfield

Went to the game last night. I know it is a friendly etc but was very impressed with the team. Some great passing- no hoofball etc.
We look like a team with belief and certainly look a lot fitter. Time will tell eh!

I have read on ssn that Leeds United have given a chance to Nigel Reo-Coker to get back into English Football, not sure of the truth but from ssn must be quite reputable.

One of the papers are this morning linking us with nigel reo-coker if I remember weren't we linked with him before? I don't think he's a bad player but he's not exciting young talent in my view

A centre back, two wingers & a striker for me would be enough for me! Looking forward to seeing Mackay-Steven on Saturday after being linked with him for the past 2 years!
