Interesting info here.

www.transferleague.co.uk/league-tables/2006-2011.html

Shows either:

a) how badly we need to sell players to survive

or

b) how much money Bates is taking from the club

Also shows what an uphill struggle the job of the Leeds United manager is.

Believable1 Unbelievable2

Thats a shocking statistic even if we had sold nobody it's around £420k paid out in transfers per season but when you think how much money we have had in it beggars belief!
Bates is a businessman and in football terms he is a pauper. He saved us and is redeveloping the ground and amenities (that we ahh

Agree1 Disagree1

Ehh hem don't own)
I hope he gives us the ultimate gift that he gave Chelsea- a mega rich investor.

Bates does not want to pay £800,000 for Keogh perhaps its because he does not think he is worth that kind of money for a one goal return. A goalscorer is what we need.

Believable7 Unbelievable0

He is not worth that much. He isn't even worth half that much. I'd pay 300k tops. Good work rate but an end product considerably inferior to Brian Deane.

Agree7 Disagree0

I bet he'd score loads in league 1.

Have heard rumours that if Leeds recieve decent offers for any of the 'big' players like Howson, Snoddy, Clayton etc then Ken Bates will let them go during the transfer window, regardless of whether Grayson wants to keep them or not as KB doesn't want to risk us missing out on promotion again and the big players values depreciatting in the summer. And were talking of offers around 4-5m not the stupid prices regularly quoted on this site, remember this is KB were talking about not a sensible chairman. And yes I do know that this means we would probably miss promotion but KB is looking at the potential profit from these players and the chance to sign another set of unknowns at low prices who can be trained into good players (then repeat cycle). May also mean another manager if KB and SG clash over this.

I think this is less a rumour and more a fairly accurate portrait of how most championship and bottom level premiership clubs function on a day to day basis to be honest.

Players we should be looking at:
Lichaj, Keith Andrews, Akos Buzsaky, Andros Townsend, Jason Puncheon and Adrian Mariappa

Believable2 Unbelievable2

Mariappa scores a lot of own goals.

Agree1 Disagree0

And some a bit closer to home-forsell and varynen -the latter looks a very classy player could save the club a lot of money.give em a chance larry.

Agree2 Disagree0

Buzsacky and marriappa would be good because they would be cheap but townsend is very unlikely

I am a lifelong LUFC fan and have to say that I'm sick and tired of the excuses that get told by the hierarchy and posted by other so called LUFC fans.

The current squad is full of crap (sorry, but we just have to admit that besides the history and fan base that we simply are not good enough) except a few exceptional players that we probably won't keep. Get rid of Larry as his track record for signing and loaning are woeful and probably the reason KB gives him no money. Get rid of most of the defence, especially Bruce who plays on his dad's reputation and not his own.
We have a huge squad that we could cut by half and not even notice (except the wage bill would be lower). Then we get a new manager and start to build a squad capable of getting and wanting promotion, and most importantly don't forget who gave them the opportunity in the first place (remember Kewell and Beckford?) instead of wanting to leave when the going gets tough. We might actually start getting somewhere then.

Believable4 Unbelievable2

Bruce doesnt play though thats the thing, and i dont think kewell and beckford should be put in the same comparison

Agree1 Disagree1

We got no money! No more complicated than that! We are being run like any other medium size business operating in the UK. Living within our means. It's the exact opposite of Ridsdale's "living the dream". Leeds won't have any decent money until they get back into the Premiership.

Bates is a....(Insert an insult which takes your fancy, (I've run out)) - Have you seen the article in the YEP today?
He's blaming the supporters now for the lack of investment from outside sources. This will also probably be his excuse for a low transfer budget (no new investment so no money). Its more likely that no one wants to work with a dodgy dealing money grabber like him. He puts off investors and he causes his own grief my berating the team and fans time and time again. He is disliked by most of the people in football, which is probably why the FA dislike us. If had a few million pounds I certainly wouldn't give him any, he'd probably hide in his off sea account and say "What money?".

only a suggestion but Beckford back from Fester be worth a move?! they would probably ask for £2m which would completely write us out of the picture but he has not settled at all since joining them.

i would certainly ahve him back with open arms

Believable8 Unbelievable2

Why would you want a player back who does not want to play for you? let him fester where he his the ungrateful person that he is (refuse to use bad language). At least Smithy went cos we had to sell him - I'd take him back as he has something our current squad lacks - abition, drive and tenacity...

Agree2 Disagree4

The reason i would have him back is because of his goal scoring record mate! approx 75 goals in 125 apperances! u can talk all you like about 'players who dont want to play for us' but there's no loyality in football these days anyway! do you think we willl ever have a squad of 25 players who all 110%, wholeheartldy wanna play for leeds? get real mate!

as for sayin at least Smith had to leave, beckford just wanted to leave its pathetic....when any Premiership club comes calls, offering more money you jump at it! he's only human at the end of the day and besides this it's not like he went to a Wigan, Wolves, Birmingham....Everton at the time were a top 10 club.

get back to reality mate

Agree3 Disagree1

Why would u want smith back he would get injured 10 mins in?

Agree3 Disagree2

Would not have Beckford back. He needed at least eight chances (in league 1) before he scored. That was the ongoing joke in the ground at the time. He relied on others to do the creating and his 'goals to chances' isn't that good that's why he is not doing so good now. If you are thinking about the times when he scored with just one chance or two and remember his goal at Old Trafford. His first touch was poor and if the goal keeper hadnt made the mistake of rushing out there would have been no goal. Two errors and he scores. Look at Somma's goal against Millwall to see how it should be done. The build up was almost exactly the same but look at the control and finish. Beckford thought he was better than he was but cant hack it with the big boys.

Agree1 Disagree3

Typical of many clowns who come on here - wouldn't want Beckford back but would take Smith back! Just too stupid for words! Bates called some fans "morons" - that isn't a strong enough word for one or two who spout off on here!!

Agree4 Disagree1

I am the original poster and it baffles me that anybody could say they wouldnt want a striker who scored over 60 goals in 2 seasons is out of their mind. fair enough it was only in league one i accept that but you can only beat whats in front of you.

and as for the comment about Somma's goal against millwall, which i somewhat agree with and i do like Somma as a player i think he's a gd goal scorer, however - when he has the goal scoring record of Beckford then your argument is a good one, until then im afraid not.

you can say he needed 8 chances to score 2 goals etc but name me a striker in the championship who creates 8 chances for himself per game!? a striker will always be judged on his goalscoring record and Beckfords at Leeds was superb.

Agree2 Disagree1

Wouldn't have Beckford back or Smith or any of the ones that have left. Dont think I am a person but i believe Beckford was over rated. OK in League one when his colleagues were carving out chance after chance so he could score just one in eight.Look at what he has done since he left - not a lot. Cant keep his place at Leicester why would we want him back. I saw him play home and away. Didn't see him as a premiership player and thought he would probably struggle in the championship. Thats the way it has turned out.

Agree0 Disagree1

Only in league one.

Wolves are wanting 600-850k for Keogh. Leeds do not have the money to spend on him, but as he is a free agent in the summer expect to see him sign permanently for next season

Believable3 Unbelievable1

He isn't worth that by a long shot, £200k max and even that I would prefer to spend on someone else. I reckon if he goes back to wolves it more due to us not wanting him rather than not being able to afford him

how bad can it get for sg?? if there is money to spend then spend it you donkey, if not resign and state the reason why you left i.e no money to spend, we are a selling club with no ambition for the prem and that the chairman is giving you totally unrealistic targets. you would easily get another job with your track record and it would just be nice to know why we are so appauling in the transfer windows along with the footballing side

Believable10 Unbelievable2

Grayson's doing the job he wants most in the world which is why he's putting up with the situation. Given the players taken from him and the money he doesn't have - he's been told we can't keep Keogh because he's too expensive at 750k ish - he's done really well. That's what makes me angry about the anti-Grayson lot - they don't seem to have any grip on reality. There is only so much you can do in the Championship with a squad that isn't even as good as our league 1 squad...

Agree5 Disagree3

Im original poster and yes grayson is doing the best in a bad situation but if he keeps agreeing with bates and adding fuel to the fire saying there is money to spend he aint winning over any fans by not getting the players in. if there is no money and he does get the boot he should do an interview with the yep and tell the fans what has really happened behind the scenes and that basically he gives bates his wishlist, bates crosses any player off that costs a fee and shaun harvey fails miserably in securing the good players!

Agree3 Disagree1

I'm the second poster and I agree entirely but Grayson's probably signed a legally binding non-disclosure agreement though which would prevent him talking to the press if he wanted to be paid out on any remaining contract when he does get sacked.

Before people start having a go, I am a season ticket holder and I go to all of the home matches. I can't go to the away matches as I use up most of my annual leave from work to go to the home ones! I have to admit that the performances this season have not been great (in fact, a lot of them have been terrible) and it's not what we expect at Elland Road.
However, I believe that we have to get behind Simon Grayson and give him our full support. His record over the last three years has been excellent.....one promotion, one place off a play off place last year, and there or thereabouts this year. Supporters have to remember that we do not have a God given right to be in the Premiership, and although it pains me to say it, we are no longer one of the big boys. Just look at the Premiership only ten years ago and you will see a lot of so-called big clubs in the Championship and even in League One.
What we are now is a well run club, free of debt, and heading in the right direction. It will take time, but we will be back in the Premiership, and when we are, we will be in very good shape to stay there. But we need to start supporting Grayson and the team at home, rather than getting on their backs.
My one moan is that we still seem reluctant to sign up our better players and promising youngsters on long term contracts. We've lost too many players for nothing over the last few years. We've got a tradition of developing some of the best youngsters in the country, but it's time we started hanging onto them!

Believable7 Unbelievable7

Excellent post, well said!

Agree2 Disagree4

Just like to point out the fact that leeds did not get into the play off places last year, we came 7th!

Agree3 Disagree1

One place off a play off place......7th....that's what I put in the original post!

Agree1 Disagree1

This myth about contracts keeps on coming up. You don't offer a player a new contract just to sell him.
Surely nobody really thinks that Kilkenny would get into our First XI, which is where he believed he should be and wanted the wage to match it. If Grayson didn't agree why would he give Kilkenny a contract that matched, say, Howson's and then try to sell him? What if nobody wanted to buy him? We're then stuck with a player we don't want.

Beckford went to Everton because they offered him a four year contract on £25k a week. There is no way we could compete with that.

This time last year everybody, bar none, was identifying Bradley Johnson as the weak link in our first team. Again, he believed he should be in the first team week in week out with a wage to match. Grayson disagreed and offered him a squad player's wage. I still think Grayson made the right choice.

I remember a few years ago the then Norwich chairman saying that players were liabilities, not assets. Surely our club can remember the folly of handing out contracts that over-value players? If Aidy White wants a contract that is more than he is worth why should we cave in to those demands?

Side before self.

Agree5 Disagree0

I agree entirely with paying players what they are worth. However, on the flip side trying to get players on the cheap will lead them to run down their contract and leave for nothing. As for Kilkenny, then if he were still here he should be the first name on the teamsheet! He is the type of player that we have been crying out for all season; someone who can actually pass the ball to a player from their own team! It is no co-incidence that last season when we played well and were winning Kilkenny was in the team. When we went on a losing streak he was out of the team (played for Australia- out for 2 months-never won a game. dropped for 3 games early part of season- lost all 3). I am not saying re-sign him but we need that type of player

Agree1 Disagree0

We are "well run" but we are NOT headed in the right direction. You need to retain best players and get better ones in. We are doing neither right now. Seems to me we get up the ladder so far but then stumble due to lack of funds. We can't compete anymore. We are not a big club anymore. The Leeds United of old and I mean before Ridsdale would have had the ability to use or borrow funds to solidify and consolidate its position but we can't even do that! That's the problem! You think we can keep hold of Howson, Snoddy and Clayton? Entice the likes of McCarthy and the few decent loanees we get to join and persuade good transfer targets to come to us instead of rivals? Think again! Money talks. We don't have it. We are a top 8 Championship club and we always will be until deeper pockets arrive at ER.

Bottom line,Grayson knows the score if he doesn't get us promoted his jobs on the line and according to Santa clause the money is available to stregthen so based on recent performances it doesn't take a genius to work out what he needs to do .
Solid hard working midfielder, tighten up the back four and bring in a good quality striker that will terrorise back 4s.
We need to stop bobbing along now and make the push.MOT.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

When has he said there is money to spend and actually put a figure on it? This weekend Bates has said we can't afford Keogh at around 600-800k so if he has said that then he's contradicting himself.

Anyway, those of us who've bothered to actually look at the accounts and know how to interpret a balance sheet can tell you definitively that there is no money to spend on players unless there is a cash injection from Bates or an outside investor waiting in the wings.

people must have less brain cells than the cast of TOWIE to say that LUFC is worse off than when Grayson took over, nobody seen what divison we are in compared to when he took over, one higher than when we took over im led to believe, come on people use your heads!

Believable2 Unbelievable5

I have an iq of 144 and the team is worse than when grayson took over. Different opinion to you does not mean less brain cells

Agree5 Disagree3

I had an iq of 154 about 3 years ago and simon grayson has done well to put us in the position we are in and i thank him for that but leeds are going down hill now, we are worse than we were last year. tactically grayson isn't experienced enough to get us promoted to the premier league

Agree2 Disagree1

An IQ of 154 puts you in the top one percentile on Mensa ratings. 144 puts you in the top two. I find it hard to believe that someone with an IQ of 144/154 can't correctly capitalise or punctuate a sentence. I also fail to see what IQ has to do with anything; intelligent people often disagree about esoteric issues such as football tactics since it's hardly an exact science. I'm not sure we can judge Grayson on tactics in any case since he has to work with a poor squad and no money. If he'd had Leicester money and the performances were still as inconsistent then that would seem fair but since he's lost good players and had to replace them with frees & loans I really can't see how anyone can judge him in that way.

Agree2 Disagree0

Correct 144 puts me in top 2 per cent. You try using correct grammar on my non smart phone.

Agree0 Disagree0

Tetchy! The point still stands; a high IQ doesn't make your view any more valid anyone else's.

I wanna know the low down on this robbie Rodgers, it says on wikipedia he's on the verge of signing a contract after a successful trial, yet the papers say he doesn't wanna sign... Personally I would to see him sign seen as though we usually sign decent trialists!
