I very much liked Wickham as a player when he was here -skillful and can run with the ball at pace (unusually nimble for a big man) . He'd be welcomed -but not as a straight replacement for Wood -Wickham is not an instinctive 6 yard box finisher / 20-30 goal a season man like Wood, more a general purpose forward.

He played a grand total of four games and was expected to play as a winger, if I recall (shakes head. gazes at floor)

He's a lazy player who if you watch the highlights of him, most of his goals are nothing special just tap ins or easy goals. Big mistake for leeds.

In the Bundesliga. Do you think Wood would better that?

Agree2 Disagree1

14 Aug 2017 09:39:55
Could not care less if this player scores 20 taps ins, as long as we win games. It fascinates me that there is an expectation that a striker in this league should be assisting 20 goals as well as scoring 30 worldies himself. Strikers who do this do not play in the Championship.

Agree1 Disagree1

14 Aug 2017 11:07:57
Strikers who score 13 in 70 plus games also don't play in the championship more like league 1 level, Chris wood scores better goals than him that's for sure just look at his 13 goals lol no vision just bundle the goals in lol poor choice Leeds

What I like about TC is he was unhappy with the point. We see so many managers who will say "a point better is than none, we are still unbeaten blah blah". The guy is a winner and wants to win every game.

Believable4 Unbelievable2

13 Aug 2017 19:33:31
Jeez, if he said we are still unbeaten and looked chuffed after 2 games i'd be worried! As for saying he's a winner sg90 i hope you are right, because so far i can't see one new player making a big difference from last season with the possible exception of saiz.

Good afternoon gents. Been reading the site for a few weeks now and decided that I should pop up in amongst the action from time to time. I will state from the outset that I recognise that i am no great footballing oracle and that my posts will be augmented by mindless, baseless optimism rather than strategic genius. That said, i am hopeful that my contributions will be more accurate than the rants of some delusion Tottenham type who is so desperate to slag us off that he joins a Leeds forum site. Bit disheartened by yesterday, but hey ho, scored 7 conceded 3, not going to fret just yet.

Open your eyes and your see your miles of being a top 6 championship team. You are a very funny man Leeds 1988 ! I think August is the time of the year for deluded fans, wishful thinking and dreaming. Our two stars and supporting cast of " nothing special players" managed to come 7th last year which wouldn't appear to be miles off the play offs but I guess we won't know who's right until the end of the season. Who is your team Leeds 1988 and where do you think they will finish?

I've just read all the posts on here and I do agree with some especially about not getting to negative! Last season we had to play six games before we could say we are ready but this season we are ready from the off and we will get better, with so many new players it will take time to see who fits where so give it chance. Also I would like to take you all back to our early season and Monks first interview which was a carbon copy of his interview yesterday, I'm so glad we are not at that place again and yesterday unlike any game last season TC had a plan B and C, which in other games will work, it wasn't the old Preston we played it was Alex Neil's Preston and like when he was at Norwich they were hard to break down in their promotion season! All that matters to me is that we are moving forward and for me we are and with an abundance of talent and I do rate TC, the pluses so far this season completely outweigh the negatives and things are looking great! So agree, I was at the game yesterday and the good thing about the time after the sending off was that we were clearly to work out how to combat Prestons style. We had ample chances and the manager was prepared to try different things, playing both Hernandez and Saiz, cutting out a defender and throwing Dallas in. It almost all worked! Some days you need a bit of luck! As everyone says, first competitive home game of the seasons and players still fitting in. There have been so many good things this summer, let's focus on these and really get behind the players and the boss. Fulham is going to be a really good test.

No one setting the world on fire or looking as if they can not be beaten . With so many new players I'm sure TC will learn how to rotate players, Philips is getting stick for his performance against Preston, but he is a young lad . Personally I think two games in a week may be a bit to much for him and Viera would have been a better choice . With the games coming thick and fast at least we have players who we can rotate in midfield .

A lot of doom and gloom on here - we can't take too much from last weeks win and the same is true of this weeks draw. Have patience the season has a long way to go. Keeping a clean sheet and not losing are two positives. It wasn't quite there yesterday but we will improve.

I really hope I'm wrong but until the back end of last season when the wheels came off, were we punching above our class? I reading this morning that wolves are after Rhodes and Oliviera in 20mill moves! We cannot compete financially and with the parachute payments for those relagated it's almost like we are starting on minus 25 again, the clubs you'd expect to be challenging are by far and away much stronger in the transfer market. Hope I'm wrong but I don't expect top 6 or promotion any time too soon due to the handicapping system and a few others having the buying power they have. It kills me to admit that.

Believable3 Unbelievable1

13 Aug 2017 08:56:04
Money isn't everything. its how you spend it. wolves to me do look strong and i think they are potential champions. I do think we could struggle to make the playoffs, we seem to be stronger up front but weaker at the back. Maybe in Jan or next summer we will strengthen that area to push forward

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2017 08:59:39
Money doesn't always buy success. Have patience and trust when the team pulls together we will start winning games a little more easily. Preston beat Wednesday last week so they aren't a bad team.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2017 09:03:40
Don't agree DL. Money spent doesn't always equate to quality and performance on the field, look at Leicester winning the Premier and Huddersfield going up last year, lots of sides outspending those. Our players and management team didn't perform when they needed to after showing that they could earlier in the season, don't think that was down to the money spent on them. In Wood we have a player being valued at close to 20 million, Alioski, Saiz and Hernandez are classy players for this division. The defence still needs strengthening and the team and manager are still getting used to working together. Let's see how we do against Fulham. don't give up yet!

13 Aug 2017 09:55:20

Just read sky sports transfer page on this, states Wolves are looking at a way around the ffp rules to sign Rhodes etc . If this is the case I hope other sides do not let this rest as it's about time certain teams with money where made to abide by the rules .

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2017 12:51:25
I do hope so dog. the implications should also not be a fine (what's the point of that, as the issue is they spend to much anyway) or a transfer ban in a couple of windows, giving them opportunity to spend more to cover their asses in the preceding windows! The punishment should be points deduction, pure and simple. the only thing which actually would hurt them! 😑

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2017 12:58:16
The problem is the owner will just create a fake company to sponsor them for the sum of say Β£50m so they pass ffp. Chansiri at the Wendies has done the same. The EFL should be clamping down on this, but I guess they won't care unless we do it.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2017 14:06:49
Surly dealing with matters once they have occurred is sort of shutting the gate when the horse has gone around the field twice. Clubs must have a good idea of what they expect there financial situation to roughly be yr to yr. I believe I'm correct in stating that other clubs have breathed the fpr and not been punished . Nothing against Wolves but they must have spent there budget and then some, not to mention the wage bill .

Cura and Spanish hit the nail. Don't get me wrong you can buy a great team, Man City for example, but it can also be done by fantastic recruitment, scouting and connections. Look at Vardy and Dele Alli and where they came from, you can get some absolute gems for a reasonable price, perhaps allioski and saiz might turn out to be just that?

Interesting. We have brought in all these players but the starting line up is just about the same as last season. Goal keeper changed and Aliaski on the wing. Other than that it is the same as the team that struggled at the end of last season. Aliaski not that great so no real difference from Dallas or Sacko.

The new left back was ok but no massive improvement from Beradi. I am one of the few that doesn't really rate Wood. He scored a lot of goals last season but did little else. I don't think he can do the same again - I think it was one of those freak seasons for him. In most of the games he was poor but then came up with a goal and everything was fine.

I think this year he will be the same but the goals won't be as plentiful. Take the money and get someone decent. He has missed a lot of chances already this season - if you include the friendlies. We need to change and hope the new players are good enough. Today Phillips, Hernandez, Roofe, and Wood reverted to type. Poor. Not keen on the goal keeper either. On the performances so far. - mid table.

Hess, I've seen Alioski play twice live and I can tell you that on Sackos current performance he is far better. When he gets the ball he exudes confidence, you can see that defenders are scared of him, he is a skillful and inventive player, but he's only played two games in this league. Yesterday Preston had a plan to stop us using the wing and denied him the time and space that he had against Port Vale but you could see he was trying and looking for a way to deal with it. Let's support and encourage him, not give up on him. Dallas at the start of this year is also not like the Dallas of last year, he looks fitter and full of energy and again on current form much better than Sacko. Preston did a good job of restricting us yesterday and particularly until the sending off we struggled to deal with it. Away, I think that formation will work better but we need to find a way of imposing more at home. After the sending off though we could easily have won it, but we didn't . 4 points from two games, not a bad start and I think The Coach will have learnt a lot from the Preston game.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2017 09:28:52
O'Leary a striker who simply goes missing for 89 minutes of a game but toe pokes the ball in from six yards for one minute a game is much less useful than a striker who scores thirty in a season, creates running, space, chances and assists for his team mates. surely you must see that. I'm not sayin that wood did go missing, but simply that all the best strikers have an all round game!

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2017 09:58:01
The point I am making is that, yes, last season he did score goals but did little else. He doesn’t usually look the part and in many games he looked poor and could have been substituted. He then scored out of the blue. I am concerned that he has had a freak season and playing the way he does I just wonder if he can reproduce the goal scoring. He has already had more chances per game this season –if you include the friendlies and has missed one or two. Early days but looking at his history I do wonder about whether we have seen the best of him. There are certainly players/strikers out there whose general play is better than his. I am not having a go at him simply wondering whether last season’s goal scoring was a flash in the pan. We shall see. I hope he does score bucket loads but I have doubts.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Aug 2017 12:15:09
A tad harsh on Wood Hesslian. I do agree that he probably won't score another 30 goals this season but is more than capable of scoring 20. I also thought he was much fitter last season and caused a more physical problem for Centre backs whilst chasing down lost causes than he did the previous season. Wood's hold up play was also greatly improved. Factor in that Monk's tactics led him to be isolated with midfield players not attacking the box. This season he will have to adapt (if he stays) as the team are committing more players forward.

I agree with you there cura, I think the whole evaluation was a bit negative. The teams still gelling and from what I've seen we have the potential, the whole style of play looks better to me. My point with Wood was that although he isn't exactly Messi, he did his job extremely well last year, he gets in to the right places and that's a skill in itself, so it's unfair to slate him after one poor performance.
